Today, when the term “Shadow Work” is mentioned, it is generally limited to the psychological model of the “shadow” in terms of that hidden aspect of our consciousness where most of our animalistic, survival and suppressed motives reside. However, this is a relatively new designation largely attributed to the work of psychologist Carl G. Jung.
Shadow Work is more than just the Jungian interpretation based on the hidden aspects on the psyche. Shadow work as found in ancient Egyptian and Eastern esoteric traditions has much deeper aspects that involve direct applications to advanced alchemy, magical practices, and even psychic self defense.
To the ancients, Shadow Work contained practices that address the psychological model, but also included much more. It also included what later, in Western Traditions, was described as Image and Imagery Work, Imagination, Visualization etc. In the East it formed the basis for the inner workings of certain similar practices, such as Yantra and Mandala Work. As such, while we study the inner workings of the larger context of Shadow Work from the ancient perspective is laregely a Magical and Mystical Practice.
